Melissa & Doug Shape, Model and Mold |
When my boys were little and money was tight, I often made their craft supplies. Usually I made the recipes below and gave the craft supplies to the boys as Christmas gifts! It was so inexpensive, and the boys could have all sorts of colours without breaking the bank.

1 cup salt
3/4 cup cold water
1/2 cup corn starch
Mix salt and cornstarch. Add cold water and stir until smooth. Boil until thick, stirring to prevent lumping. Make certain the starch is cooked. Cool. Knead until smooth. Store dough in a plastic bag or container.
1 cup salt
1/2 cup cornstarch
1/2 cup boiling water
Mix salt, cornstarch and water in saucepan. Heat over low heat, stirring constantly until mixture is too stir to stir. When cool, knead until smooth.
Paint masterpieces when dry.
Can make necklaces, punch small holes in rounded pieces, let dry and paint. Also Christmas decorations, animals, etc.

Spoon powdered paint onto cotton balls in a saucer. Wet slightly. Cut potatoes, carrots, onions, green pepper or ??? in 1/2 inch sizes, or cut into designs! OR use odds and ends from the junk drawer - combs, corks, paper clips, spools, bottle lids, steel wool, felt pieces, old earrings, etc.
1/3 box cornstarch
water
Add a small amount of cold water to cornstarch. Four boiling water in slowly, stirring constantly until the mixture thickens. Add a few drops of dish soap for easier washing. This is ready for finger painting. Just sprinkle on tempera paint powder. With the left-over mixture, add colour and store in a jar for brush painting.
1 3/4 cups Ivory Snow (powder or flakes)
50 drops food coloring
1/4 cup water
Mix water and soap flakes together. Add food coloring and put mixture into an ice cube tray. (I am wondering if we could use cookie cutters or somehow get them into better shapes than just the ice cube tray, but haven't tried yet). Allow to harden. Break or cut into pieces. Fun to write with on the tub when bathing and face and hands!!!
