A "disposable" diaper will only cost a few cents per diaper, and you can pick them up along with your groceries, so how can they really be as expensive as spending several hundred dollars on cloth diapers? Even if it does cost a little bit more for "disposables", isn't easier to spend just a small amount each week?
Sometimes, it can be hard to come up with that much money all at once.
To help you see the real costs of "disposable" diapers, I have used Pampers® "disposable" diapers, at two current price levels
- regular price (according to Amazon.com) and rock-bottom sale price of $0.12/diaper, with coupons.

Buy at Amazon Pampers Swaddlers Sensitive Diapers |
The Pampers Swaddlers Sensitive Diapers Size 1 package contains 192 diapers at $0.26/diaper. Your newborn will need about 10-12 diaper changes per day in the first four weeks. In that month's time you have only used about two packages or 360 diapers. For a total cost for your baby's first month of $93.60 at regular price, $43.20 at sale price, with coupons.
Well, that's not too bad, just pocket-change . . . right?
But the Pampers Swaddlers Sensitive Diapers Size 2 package only contains 168 diapers at $0.30/diaper. Your baby will need about 8-10 diaper changes a day from one to five months of age. So you still only need to bring home just two packages per month. But that's a total of 1,200 diapers for just four months. For a total cost of $360.00 at regular price, $144.00 at sale price, with coupons.
O.K., it's getting a little more expensive, but your time is valuable . . . right?
If you are lucky, your baby will still fit into Step Two diapers for another few months. But your baby will still need about 8 changes a day from five to nine months. That's another 960 diapers for the next four months or so. For a total cost of $288.00 at regular price, $115.20 at sale price, with coupons.
But... but... cloth diapers are a lot more work . . . aren't they????
The Pampers Swaddlers Sensitive Diapers Size 3 package contains only 156 diapers at $0.32/diaper. Your 9-12 month baby still needs about 8 diaper changes a day. So add on five more packages or 720 diapers for three months. For a total cost of $230.40 at regular price, $86.40 at sale price, with coupons.
Have you run out of coupons yet? Are you still catching all of the sales?
Ouch! This is really adding up . . . isn't it!?
So in just your baby's first year alone, you will have lugged home about 21 Jumbo-sized packages or 3,240 diapers. For a total outlay from your pocket of $972.00 at regular price, $388.80 even at sale prices, with those blasted coupons!
Wait, the baby isn't toilet trained yet!?
Of course, it does get better once your baby is over a year old . . . right? The Pampers Swaddlers Sensitive Diapers Size 4 package only contains 136 diapers at $0.37/diaper, but your 12-18 month baby will need just 6 diaper changes a day. That's about eight packages or 1,080 diapers for six months. For a total cost of $399.60 at regular price, $129.60 at sale price, with coupons.
Wait a minute . . . how much did you say cloth diapers would cost!?
After this long, why bother switching to cloth? Your toddler now only needs about 5 diaper changes per day. That's just 150 diapers a month. Well, from ages 18-30 months that would be 15 packages or 1,800 diapers, because the Pampers Cruisers Diapers Size 5 package contains only 124 diapers at $0.38/diaper! For another year's cost of $684.00 at regular price, $216.00 even at sale price, with darn coupons.
But... but... this is costing you more than your baby's first year!?
Will this child EVER get toilet-trained!?!?!

Buy at Amazon Flat-Folded Cloth Diapers |
If the price of "disposable" diapers does not increase before your child is finally toilet-trained (ha-ha!), two and a half years of diapering is going to cost you over $2,055.60!
And that's all before adding in any taxes.
Why, even at sale prices and couponing to the extreme, it is still going to cost you over $734.40! That's assuming that you catch every single sale. And use high value coupons with every single purchase.
And that your child doesn't react to the diapers, they fit well and you don't have to switch brands to fit one that works well with your baby.
Gee . . . how much did you say a new washer and dryer would cost?
STILL, aren't all these new cloth diapers awfully expensive?
Why, your mother only paid $8.00 for a dozen flat diapers, and they were good enough for you, as a baby!
(Let's see, wasn't that back when minimum wage was 50 cents an hour, and you could go to the store with a dollar . . .
and come back with a loaf of bread, a quart of milk and CHANGE!!?)
O.K., so you CAN still buy the same Flat-Folded Cloth Diapers your mother used on you. These diapers are even still on sale for about $11.00 a dozen.
But TODAY'S busy parents are demanding better quality, better fit, and quick and easy use. They want diapers with good absorbency, no messy leaks - and a fashion sense to boot!
In short, they want a cloth diaper with all the convenience and ease of a "disposable", without the high, guilt-ridden, environmental cost.
